More related stories. Contrary to widespread belief, the attacks were not a precursor to an invasion, according to the National Archives of Australia. They were mounted to hinder Darwin's potential as a base from which to attack Japanese forces that were planning to invade Timor and to damage Australian morale. The attacks, involving 54 land-based bombers and attack aircraft, were planned and led by the same Japanese commander who led the attacks on Pearl Harbor 10 weeks earlier.

Twenty military aircraft were destroyed, eight ships at anchor in the harbour were sunk and most civil and military facilities in Darwin were destroyed. Mr Penhall said he was evacuated from the city after jumping down a cliff and hiding in low scrub during the bombings.
