More related stories. Contrary to widespread belief, the attacks were not a precursor to an invasion, according to the National Archives of Australia. They were mounted to hinder Darwin's potential as a base from which to attack Japanese forces that were planning to invade Timor and to damage Australian morale. The attacks, involving 54 land-based bombers and attack aircraft, were planned and led by the same Japanese commander who led the attacks on Pearl Harbor 10 weeks earlier.
