What does diy mean in music

When booking a concert at a commercial venue, a band has many logistics to consider, most of which include additional costs, like paying for a sound guy. What if, instead of exchanging logistics and costs with a commercial venue, all a band had to do was exchange a few texts with someone with a house?

Well this is where the house show comes in. Due to its somewhat underground nature, you may not hear about DIY bands as much as popular musicians who use large record labels, but keep an eye out for for the next house show near you to check out some awesome music. The actual definition of a DIY space is hard to explain. Any musician or band can sign up to perform if there is an open time slot, they simply have to put their names on a sign-up sheet. The spaces are usually run by other indie musicians, and every night they host live performances in a club-like atmosphere. You will meet other artists, hear new music, and develop your performance skills in a low-stress, open environment.

Most of the places are open to all ages, so artists who are under 21 have a chance to perform and be heard as well. Many bands start out playing DIY spaces, and grow to love them. Even though this sounds like a large amount of people to be fitting into a house or small venue, it is nowhere close to the amount you would find at a traditional venue. If you have ever been to a DIY show, you know the feeling of sharing sweat with the other attendees.

People push through cramped kitchens to break free to the back yard just to get a breath of fresh air. Maybe it sounds gross, but it is exhilarating. The idea of sharing this space with your friends, friends of friends and even future friends is exciting.

After attending a few shows, unfamiliar faces in the crowd become familiar, accompanied by a name. People make friends, laughs and memories at these shows. While all this is great, there are some things that people need to understand about the scene. Because everything and everyone is self-made, respect of others and spaces is a must.
